The Basics of Poker Strategy

Poker is a card game that requires a certain level of logical thinking to play well. Unlike other table games like soccer or baseball, you cannot win this game based on chances and guesses. The key is to be able to read the other players at your table and understand their betting behavior, tells and body language. In this way, you can make smarter decisions and improve your chances of winning.

There is a round of betting that begins once everyone has received 2 hole cards and the initial forced bets called blinds have been put into the pot. Once the flop is dealt, another betting round begins with one more card being revealed on the turn. Once all the bets are placed, a player must either fold or raise his hand. The best hands are made from a combination of your two personal cards and the 5 community cards on the table. Top players will often fast-play their strong hands because this builds the pot and chases off other players who may be holding a better hand.

More advanced players will work out the range of hands that the other player could have and then use this information to decide whether to raise, call or fold. If they do raise, they will be looking to get the maximum amount of money into the pot and will try to price all of the weaker hands out. This is a good strategy as it helps to protect your own stack and allows you to maximize the value of your strong hands.
